Located in the southern part of Beijing and
surrounded by 5 km of wall, the Temple of Heaven
(Tiantan)is one of the finest sites in Beijing, You
will want to prepare for a of of walking as Tiantan
is about 3 times as large as the Forbidden City,
Historically, it has been one of the most sacred
places in China for the past 500 years.
Near the north end of the park, the Altar of Prayer
for Good Harvests (Qigutan) is perhaps one of the
best known symbols for Beijing and China, its
round, triple layer cone-shaped roof is truly
something to behold, It was built in 1420 and the
roof was three colours representing the Heavens
(blue),the Emperor (yellow) and the bottom layer
was the common people (brown). In 1 752 alf of
the eaves were painted heavenly blue and they
remained that way until the hall was struck by
lightning and burned in 1889.It was rebuilt the following year and renovated
once again in 1970.

The Circular Mound Altar in the south is the other major
highlight here and be sure to try out the Echo Wall
where a person whispering at any point along the wall
can be clearly heard at any point along the wall This of
course depends on the number of people also trying to
whisper a message around the walI at the same time as
you.
