Simatai Great Wall
Simatai section of the Great Wall is the most dangerous
section. There are 1 6 beacon towers in the east of
Simatai section. and from the fourteenth beacon tower. it is the most dangerous parts of the Great Wall. The
section from the fourteenth beacon towers to the fifteenth
is called heavenly ladder. and the section from the
fifteenth to sixteenth is called heavenly bridge which is
the most dangerous. Only pass this section of the Great
Wall, can you know the danger of the Great Wall and the
difficulty to build it and It is said that bricks were carried by
goats on their back and then this section was built.
It is about a two hour drive from Beijing to Simatai. The
walk then takes between three and five hours. You can do
the whole thing in one long day or go to the start of your
walk at the end of the day, have dinner, sleep and get up
at sunrise and do the walk. It will certainly be less
crowded at that time. Sun rise is beautiful on a clear day
and the wall can be amazing in foggy weather too.
Simatai is bigger, more developed and touristy than
smaller Jinshanling. Jinshanling is better as a starting
point because it is easier and faster to get up onto the
wall. If you want to sleep up on the wall there is a shop in
a watchtower just above Jinshanling. You can contact the
shopkeeper and make arrangements for meals and
accommodation.
